About this role

Pfizer is committed to the application of computational science in drug discovery and development, and has initiated a large-scale migration of computational infrastructure to the cloud. This role provides technical vision and drives the execution of high-performance computing (HPC) solutions that support computational workloads across the organization.

You will lead the technical architecture of the cloud HPC platform, establishing go-forward computing technologies and implementing robust engineering practices. Day-to-day, you will champion infrastructure as code (IaC), configure core services for HPC at scale, and perform troubleshooting, system analysis, and benchmarking to maintain a high-performance environment.

You will work closely with HPC engineers and scientific computing specialists to develop robust, scalable, high-performance cloud native infrastructure. Collaboration with stakeholders, users, and leaders is key to developing a long-term technical roadmap for cloud-based HPC services, and you will lead deep-dive discussions with technical partners at major cloud providers.

This role offers the opportunity to drive a culture of shared ownership, transparency, and engineering excellence through mentoring and coaching. You will recommend cutting-edge HPC technologies, including specialized accelerators and novel storage solutions, directly shaping the modernization of Pfizer's scientific computing platform.

Requirements

  • Experience leading technical architecture of cloud HPC platforms.
  • Expertise in infrastructure as code (IaC) tools such as Terraform and CloudFormation.
  • Deep knowledge of high-performance computing technologies including specialized accelerators, parallel file systems, and job schedulers.
  • Proven ability to design and manage high-throughput, parallel, low-latency infrastructure for HPC and ML/AI workloads.
  • Experience with multiple cloud environments, particularly AWS and GCP.
  • Strong background in OS image development and configuration management for HPC clusters.
  • Ability to perform system analysis, benchmarking, and troubleshooting of escalated, difficult-to-resolve issues.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and driving a culture of shared ownership and engineering excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and operationalize cloud-based HPC infrastructure for research, modeling, and large-scale data processing across multiple cloud environments.
  • Serve as primary technical expert to evaluate, advocate for, and drive consensus on go-forward technology platforms and toolkits for HPC service delivery.
  • Design and own robust, high-throughput, parallel, low-latency infrastructure for HPC and ML/AI workloads in AWS and GCP.
  • Establish technical standards, best practices, architectural frameworks, and implementation guidelines for reproducible HPC platform and application deployments.
  • Own OS image development, job scheduler configuration, and high performance storage systems.
  • Drive adoption of infrastructure automation using IaC tools like Terraform and CloudFormation.
  • Establish and enforce internal standards for naming, tagging, documentation, version control, and change procedures to ensure repeatable environment provisioning and scaling.
  • Lead deep-dive discussions with technical partners at major cloud providers to define HPC-related requirements and deliverables for Statements of Work.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to shape the modernization of Pfizer's scientific computing platform.
  • Work with cutting-edge HPC technologies including specialized accelerators and novel storage solutions.
  • Collaborate with technical partners at major cloud providers (AWS/GCP).
  • Lead a high-impact migration of computational infrastructure to the cloud.
  • Drive innovation in drug discovery and development through computational science.
