About this role

Smartsheet is uniting human teams with AI agents to create magic at work, and we are seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer to own and operate our edge proxy platform and internal engineering tooling. This custom-built, high-performance reverse proxy serves as the entry point for all traffic across Smartsheet's commercial and FedRAMP-authorised US Government environments.

You will own the full lifecycle of this platform: from maintaining the proxy binary and its configuration tooling, to provisioning and operating multi-region AWS EKS infrastructure, to managing observability and on-call for every service that routes through it. Beyond the edge layer, you will drive the evaluation and adoption of internal developer tooling that improves the engineering experience across the company.

You will work remotely from Bulgaria, reporting to the Engineering Manager, and collaborate with peers through code reviews, architecture discussions, and runbook authorship. The team fosters a culture of engineering excellence and operational rigour, with a focus on automation and scalable infrastructure.

This role offers the opportunity to strategically apply AI and shape the platform that powers Smartsheet's next chapter of growth. You will mentor teammates, influence architectural decisions, and directly impact the reliability and developer experience of a globally distributed SaaS platform.

Requirements

Experience maintaining and extending a high-performance reverse proxy, including writing Go and Python automation
Deep experience with Terraform/Terragrunt for managing cloud infrastructure as code across multiple AWS regions
Proven ability to operate Kubernetes clusters at scale using GitOps workflows (FluxCD) and Helm charts
Strong background in building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, preferably with GitLab CI/CD
Experience with observability tooling such as Datadog for SLOs, monitors, and dashboards
Familiarity with FedRAMP or GovCloud environments, including air-gapped image distribution and infrastructure automation in isolated networks
Ability to automate operational tasks such as container image patching, AMI rotation, and version-bump patching cycles
Experience mentoring peers and contributing to architecture discussions and runbook authorship

Responsibilities

Own and evolve the edge proxy platform by maintaining, upgrading, and extending a high-performance reverse proxy, including maintaining the proxy binary and its configuration tooling
Build and maintain cloud infrastructure as code using Terraform/Terragrunt modules managing EKS clusters, load balancers, IAM roles, VPC networking, and supporting AWS services across multiple regions including GovCloud
Operate Kubernetes clusters at scale by managing multi-region, multi-cluster EKS deployments via FluxCD GitOps workflows and Helm charts
Build and own CI/CD pipelines by designing, maintaining, and improving shared GitLab CI/CD pipeline templates used across all team repositories
Automate operational toil by building and maintaining tooling for container image patching, EKS AMI rotation, and air-gapped ECR image sync to GovCloud
Manage observability and on-call responsibilities by provisioning and maintaining Datadog SLOs, monitors, and dashboards via Terraform, and participating in the team's on-call rotation
Support FedRAMP/GovCloud operations including air-gapped image distribution, infrastructure automation in isolated networks, and compliance-aware alert management
Mentor and collaborate with peers through code reviews, architecture discussions, and runbook authorship, fostering a culture of engineering excellence
