Ashby

Los Angeles, US · Full-time · $180,000 – $240,000

About this role

We're looking for a versatile, intrinsically motivated designer who is excited to contribute to rethinking how modern software is designed. At Ashby, you'll be part designer, part product manager, part consultant, and part design system manager—or some combination of the four.

Our unique approach means design is required in varying degrees on each project. Sometimes you'll write documentation for engineers to reuse existing components; other times you'll own a project from beginning to end, providing updates and managing resources yourself.

You'll report to Benji, the co-founder & CEO, who believes design should be owned by the product team collectively. Your role is to equip the entire product team to make better design decisions, edit choices made by PMs and engineers, and tackle the biggest design challenges yourself.

We maintain a near seed-stage culture with fuzzy lines between roles, as much autonomy as you can handle, and an almost-no-meeting culture. You get the product-market fit and scale of a growth-stage startup with the agency and no-red-tape environment of a seed-stage company.

Requirements

  • Versatile, intrinsically motivated designer excited to contribute to rethinking software design
  • Experience owning projects from beginning to end, effectively acting as product manager when needed
  • Ability to balance designer, PM, consultant, and design system responsibilities across projects
  • Comfortable editing design decisions made by PMs and engineers and guiding the team's design quality
  • Experience working closely with engineers to enable them to build from documentation and existing components
  • Thrives in a high-autonomy, low-meeting, no-red-tape culture

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to rethinking how modern software is designed as part designer, part product manager, part consultant, and part design system manager
  • Own projects from beginning to end, including providing updates and managing resources when appropriate
  • Equip the entire product team to make better design decisions and edit choices made by PMs and engineers
  • Tackle the biggest design challenges independently
  • Write documentation and guidelines so engineers can reuse existing components for simpler projects
  • Maintain a near seed-stage culture with fuzzy lines between functional roles and focus on IC work
  • Operate with as much autonomy as you can handle in a low-meeting environment

Benefits

  • Near seed-stage culture with fuzzy lines between roles and as much autonomy as you can handle
  • Almost-no-meeting culture with focus on individual contributor work
  • Scale and product-market fit of a growth-stage startup with the agency of a seed-stage company
  • Strong growth trajectory with 100%+ year-over-year growth, low churn, and many years of runway
  • Work with notable customers like Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake
